Nurture room opened in SMOTI

June 3, 2023

St Maries of the Isle has established its first Nurture Room in the school.

Nurture practice is all about supporting children to work on underdeveloped skills that are needed to access learning in the mainstream classroom.

Under the stewardship of Ms. Cadman and Mr. Barry, the Nurture Room has been up and running since January.

In their Nurture groups, children work on self-regulation skills, emotional literacy, social skills, building self-esteem and confidence development.

In their Nurture groups children learn how to learn, with academic attainment the ultimate goal of the programme.

All of these skills are taught whilst integrating curriculum objectives being taught in the mainstream classroom using play-based approaches, creative arts and other practical activities.

Amongst the activities children engage in during their Nurture groups include: circle time, turn-taking, baking, crafts, cooking, puzzles, mindfulness meditation and yoga.
