St Maries of the Isle put in a hugely impressive team performance at the recent Ficheall Chess Championships.

The school sent four teams of eight students to the competition, which was held at Ballygarvan National School on January 18, and came home with victory in both main categories.

Ballygarvan NS, Bunscoil Críost Rí, Gaelscoil an Teaghlaigh Naofa and Scoil Nioclás all competed in the tournament.

Students from St Maries of the Isle took the top 10 positions out of 64 in the Masters (5th and 6th class) category.

Students from the school also dominated the 3rd and 4th class category, with all students putting in strong performances.

The school has now qualified for the Munster Championships which will take place later in the year.

A huge well done to Mr. Hurley for all his hard work in preparing the teams for the competition and for the effort he has put into making chess such a success in the school.

Mr. Hurley takes chess club for 1st and 2nd class students after school every Tuesday and for 3rd and 4th class children every Wednesday. Classes finish at 3.15pm.
